Welcome to the CIAMR

Williams Laboratory at the University of Minnesota is the location for the Center for Interdisciplinary Applications of Magnetic Resonance (CIA-MR). The CIA-MR is located in approximately 2500 sq. ft. of laboratory space and includes MRI, general wet-bench, cell culture and animal surgery facilities. Access to an on-site fully-equipped machine shop enables the laboratory to construct customized hardware for specialized MRI applications.

Developing double-duty diagnostic tools

This laboratory was first called the John H. Williams Laboratory of Nuclear Physics (aka Tandem Lab) under the department of Physics, in honor of Professor J. Williams before it became the CIA-MR, under the departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering.

In nuclear physics, Professor J. Williams, as Atomic Energy Commissioner, helped develop the national atomic energy program. He also led an effort which brought to the University a series of increasingly powerful accelerators to study nuclear structure, which culminated in the installation of a large tandem van der Graaf. Experimental and Theoretical Nuclear Physics thrived with the commissioning of the tandem. Major modern machine and electronics shop facilities were developed to meet the needs of the nuclear structure and space physics programs. [Source]
