Our Magnets

The CIA-MR is located in approximately 2500 sq. ft. of laboratory space and includes MRI, general wet-bench, cell culture and animal surgery facilities. Access to an on-site fully-equipped machine shop enables the laboratory to construct customized hardware for specialized MRI applications.


1.5 Tesla MR Systems (Magnex Scientific) with a bore of 680 mm
  • It has a self shielded gradient set that delivers 0.15 mT/m/A along the x,y and z axes.
  • The gradients are driven by Techron 7700 amplifiers which are capable of delivering 180 amps per axis at 160 V
  • Contains a home-built RF shielded room on each end of the magnet that affords better than 100 dB RF isolation from the environment.

5 Tesla MR Systems (Magnex Scientific) with a bore of 400 mm
  • Magnex SGRAD MK II 350/210 self shielded gradient with x and y axis gradient strengths of 0.65 mT/m/A and a z axis gradient strength of 0.53 mT/m/A. 
  • The gradients are driven by Techron 7700 amplifiers which are capable of delivering 180 amps per axis at 160 V

17 Tesla Levitating Magnet (Oxford Instruments)
  • Bore size 50 mm
  • It has fixed high current leads so the field can be adjusted from 0 to 17.0 Tesla in less than one hour.
  • The magnet can levitate living and non-living diamagnetic compounds, thus providing an environment simulating orbital freefall.

Gradients: In addition, the laboratory has a several high-field gradient inserts suitable for pulsed field-gradient diffusion studies, including an actively shielded Magnex SGRAD III 195/120 gradient insert with x, y, z gradient strengths of 2.5 mT/m/A per axis, and a home-built NMR microscopy probe capable of 1000 Gauss/cm along the z axis.

RF amplifiers available: (2) AMT 3205 300 W 6-220 MHz; (1) ENI LPI-10 1 kW 10-86 MHz; (1) ENI 310L 10 W 1-110 MHz; (1) ENI 3200L 0.25 – 150 MHz. The laboratory is well equipped for custom RF receiver coil design and testing. Electronic test equipment include: HP 8753A and HP 4195B, HP 8712C network analyzers, HP 8656A RF signal generator, SRS DS-340 15 MHz arbitrary waveform generator, SRS DS-345 30 MHz arbitrary waveform generator,  Lecroy Waverunner 6100 1 GHz 4 Ch digital oscilloscope, Tektronix TDS2014 4 channel oscilloscope, Tektronics 2465B digital oscilloscope, Tektronics 2440 analog oscilloscope. MR compatible small animal monitoring and gating system (SA Instruments, Stony Brook, NY). On-site cell culturing facilities include a Hotpack 3103D CO2 incubator, laminar flow sterile hood, and an Acysyst (Cellex Biosciences) hollow fiber  bioreactor process control system that has been customized for NMR applications.

Computer: The CIA-MR has four Pentium-4 (1.2 – 1.9 GHz) PC’s. Major scientific software licenses include: Interactive Data Language (IDL) ver 6.0 (image processing software), Faraday ver 6.1 (electromagnetic modeling software), LabVIEW 7.0 Development system (control experiments/analyze data) and Matlab 13 (image processing/data analysis). The laboratory also has a 100 MPS fiber optic network connection.

Machine Shop: The machine shop located in Williams Laboratory is available for the construction of specialized devices associated with the maintenance and expansion of experimental set-ups.
